Brain Memory Functioning and Tips to improve it!

A certain amount of brain memory is needed to carry out and plan out daily activities. Beyond that, your memory should also be able to assist you in remembering important issues, people, places and things that affect your life, dates and likewise aid your intelligence level.

Some individuals are blessed with an excellent memory which helps them stand out amongst the rest of the crowd. However, it is not impossible for an average person to work on improving his/her memory. You will make note that it requires constant practice and hard work to improve the brain memory, but it can be done.

Some General Tips on Improving Your Brain Memory

Without going deep into psychological terminology, I am mentioning here a few tips which can help any person to improve his/her memory. You may follow these rituals into and be able to improve your memory

•    Engage In Physical Exercise

It is strange, but physical exercise plays a vital role in brain health (…after all the brain is a physical entity). Physical activity helps bring more oxygen and nutrients to your brain, which inevitably can help improve overall brain function. Additionally, regular exercise can help increase your alertness and concentration.

•    Engage In Mental Exercise

This can take on a variety of forms; basically, engage in some activity that makes you think. Some commonly cited activities include playing games such as Scrabble, or completing puzzles such as Sudoku or crossword puzzles; you could also read certain books that will make you think, such as books on other cultures or books on philosophy.

•    Get An Adequate Amount Of Sleep

Being sleep deprived can interfere with tasks that require memory retention.

•    Look After Your Diet

Specifically, eating more fruit, vegetables, and fish can help improve brain memory.

•    Employ Everyday Learning Techniques

For instance, when learning something new, instead of studying information alone, analyze the structure of the information; if it is a diagram, for example, construct a mental picture of how all of those pieces fit together, to create that diagram.

Understanding Your Brain’s Memory Function

Specifically, the part of the brain that plays a significant role in both short-term and long-term memory includes the hippocampus. Humans and other animals have two hippocampi, one located in each hemisphere of the brain; both of which belong to the limbic system.

In certain diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, the hippocampus is one of the first elements of the brain that can get affected, which can result in symptoms such as memory loss and disorientation. Some other reasons why the hippocampus may be damaged include lack of oxygen and specific epileptic episodes.

Online Brain Training Programs

There are many websites which you can visit, that feature games that are specifically designed to help with brain memory. Luminosity, Happy Neuron, Posit Science, Fit Brains and Cognitive Fun are some of them.

The best one, which I have tested myself, is High IQ Pro.

The Role of Nutrition

Certain foods help with memory and improve overall brain function. For instance, foods that include vitamin B-12 will help boost brain function; specifically, researchers report that you should ingest at least 2.4 micrograms of this vitamin each day.

Some foods are rich in this vitamin, vitamin B-12, include meats, eggs, milk, certain cereals, and poultry. You can increase meat and dairy intake to help ensure that you are getting enough of this vitamin daily. Along with boosting overall brain function, this vitamin has other added benefits.

For example, it will help increase brain health, memory, and concentration.

Another vitamin that should be introduced into your diet, if it is not already, is vitamin E. Its primary benefit to you, is that it will help increase your brain memory and concentration.

Hence, researchers highly recommend adding it to your diet; at least 15 milligrams every day. It is also reported that the vitamin can also protect the nerve cells in your brain.

There are multiple foods which naturally include vitamin E, and so these foods should be incorporated into your diet. Such foods include the following: vegetable oils, almonds, peanuts, spinach, carrots, and avocados.

Eating high amounts of vegetables has been reported to prevent the decline in memory function and retention. Hence, some other foods to include in your diet include broccoli, cabbage, and collard greens. Some non-vegetable foods include berries, plums, apples, rhubarbs, apricots, and much more.

The Negative Effects of Alcohol on Brain Memory

Drinking alcohol in excess can interfere with the brain memory function. For instance, it is reported that alcohol can disrupt your ability to form memories involving new stimuli, although it does not impact the explicit recall of previously learned information. It has also been found that alcohol negatively affects short-term memory and overall cognitive functioning.
