An aptitude test is a test designed to identify specific skills, abilities and thought processes. The test can come in a variety of forms, from verbal, to written, to physical. In addition, the test can be either a general one, or a very specific one. General aptitude tests are simply a means of establishing where your personal skills lie.
Put another way, what is the point of thinking about becoming an accountant if you struggle with numbers? Would you make a good fireman if you didn’t like physical work? Would you be a good surgeon if you were clumsy with your hands? Would you be a good journalist if you were good with words?
What an aptitude test does is establish what you are good at. It shows what things you are best at doing. It also lets you know what you are not so good at. That way you can get a better idea of what work you might succeed at.
The world around us is changing through advancements in science and technology. This means that new and differing jobs appear, opportunities you never even knew existed. Sometimes however, too much choice can make life hard. Just passing exams in science doesn’t automatically mean you’ll make a great scientist.
Often, when you are looking to leave school, many of your friends may seem to have their future mapped out. The may join their father’s business, or they may join the armed forces. Often the decision is made for them by their parents. However a career isn’t something you chop and change on a regular basis.
To have a greater chance of succeeding in your chosen career, it makes sense to get an early understanding of what you are naturally good at. It is easier to succeed in life if you do something you are already gifted at, than to have to learn how to do everything from scratch. The obvious answer is to take a career aptitude test. Not only will it give you an idea of what choices of career might suit you best, but it will also tell you what careers to avoid.
When you are young, it is easy to change direction. When you are older, it is more difficult as often you will have commitments to a family of your own. Also, opportunities are just hard to come by when you are competing against younger people. The decisions you make when you are young will influence the rest of your life.
Finally, you are at work for a long time – probably sixty years give or take. If you are going to work that long, it is a good idea to know from the onset you are in the right job!
