Useless Wonderlic Test

by Kris
(Chicago, IL)

A
I recently had to take a Wonderlic test for an HR Manager position with a company in Chicago. I have 10 years of experience and a Bachelors degree with High Honors from a Big Ten University. I always get the highest marks on my annual performance reviews at work. How is a silly test like this going to predict my success as an HR Manager? Is it going to measure my knowledge of employment law, which is probably the single most important thing an HR Manager must know? Will it measure my interpersonal skills, another critical skill for HR people? Or my ability to conduct an investigation into a harassment claim? What a complete waste of time!!!

10 years in HR and you don't see the need to consistantly apply a hiring process? Maybe your experience and knowledge is all it takes. But conducting a consistant hiring process is a big boost to a defense against discrimitory hiring by an applicant for a different position.

Wonderlic - Useless test??

Kris, this seems kind of ironic. Assessments that are made to determine various capabilities and improve organizational performance. If you can't measure it, it doesn't exist and how would HR prove its value to the overall strategy through human capital if you didn't have assessments to improve your selection process? It seems to me you are suffering at the expense of your own chosen career path. welcome.

Wonderlic Test

Cognitive ability, which is what the WPT measures, is the best predictor of potential success on the job. This is a documented fact. However it should be the only criteria used when making a hiring decision - personality, critical skills, experience, references, etc. are all part of the overall picture of an applicant. Since you were applying for an HR Manager position, I am surprised that you were not aware of this. Either way, good luck with your job search.
